CHAPTER 16

HALEY

I stare at the bed, taking up most of the room, and cross my arms over my chest, wondering how this will work.

It can’t work.

While there is nothing between Trevor and me romantically, I can’t lie and say I’m not attracted to him. He’s still the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on. I haven’t been alone with him since I was nineteen.

So many memories are rushing back, and my cheeks heat, the sounds he makes while he feels so good, the way he touches me when he’s close to orgasm, and I glance away from the bed.

It’s mocking me.

Trevor tosses his bags on the floor and lies on the mattress, groaning as he kicks off his shoes as if he doesn’t remember a thing of our time together.

He probably doesn’t. I bet I got lost in the mix of all of his hookups.

“What are you doing?” I ask, picking up his shoes and putting them back on his feet.

“What does it look like? I’m going to sleep.”

“You can sleep on the floor.”

He scoffs. “I’m not sleeping on the floor. Plus, that can’t be good for my head. Do you want to be responsible for me getting another injury, all because we couldn’t be adults and share a bed? It’s big enough for both of us, Hales.”

I toss the shoe down and bite my cheek. “Do not call me that.”

“I understand, okay? I know you hate me. You don’t want to room with me, but it’s only for a few days; surely, we can put everything aside and be civil.”

“It isn’t about that.” I walk to my suitcase and open it, looking for fresh pajamas and my face wash. I need to wash this day off me and go to sleep. I’ll deal with Trevor tomorrow.

“Then what the fuck is it about, Haley?” he snaps.

It’s about the fact I don’t hate him.

It’s about the fact that I want to climb on top of him and ride him until his next game day.

It’s about me being mad at myself for wanting that.

And I’ve controlled myself. I’ve kept the want locked inside for so long that I won’t let us being in the same room temporarily ruin me.

Again.

Turning around so fast that the ends of my hair hit me in the face, I say, “Don’t talk to me like that.”

He sits up and pinches the bridge of his nose before rubbing his eyes in frustration. “Why not? I try to talk to you with kindness; I try to give you space; I try, Haley. I try!” he roars, standing next to the bed. An angry growl builds. “What do you want? You act as if I called the damn resort and had them switch your room into mine or something. Weren’t you here before me? Where’s your room? Maybe you’re the one that caused the mix-up. Do you think I want to be stuck in the room with someone who would rather have me dead?”

I suck in a breath, his words stabbing me like a hot, serrated knife.
